# DXLII…Memories of a Wrestling Icon…

This date, May 18th, is the birthday of one of the original “high-flyers” of professional wrestling…Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka, who was born in Fiji on this date in 1943 *.  A true sportsman and athlete in his prime, Mr. Snuka will always be in my subconscious mind…being that I have an autographed photo which I received while attending a wrestling show in my hometown of Jersey City!

It was during a show in which I also received the autographs of legends like Tito Santana, Nikolai Volkoff and Marcus “Buff” Bagwell, who were all performing at a low-level ring promotion about ten years ago, before I left, at Pershing Field Park.  I really can’t remember a lot of specific information about that day but I can tell you that I walked away with some cool memories!

Also, just as a sidebar to this story…Nikolai Volkoff’s autograph was the most humbling for me, as he was just there (a legend in my youth) and NO ONE was even approaching him!  So, I casually walked up to his table, grabbed a photo, handed over my cash as he was signing it and he thanked me for buying it…which, looking back, really wasn’t necessary (as I said, he was a legend in my time)…

Back to the birthday boy, however, as just to let you know, he does have offspring that are wrestlers, as well; Tamina Snuka (natch) and the WWE superstar formerly known as Deuce.  In addition, I would like to mention that Jimmy Snuka’s presence in the ring, as well as outside, will be felt for generations to come.

Also celebrating today are; late crooner Perry Como (1912-2001), late religious leader Pope John Paul II (1920-2005), late actor Pernell Roberts (1928-2010), actor Dwayne Hickman (“The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis”) {1934}, former Yankees’ great Reggie Jackson (1946), Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman (1949) {the day after fellow Yes member Bill Bruford} and country legend George Strait was born in 1952.

Finishing today’s list are; actor Chow Yun-fat (1955), former NHLer Jari Kurri (1960), tennis phenom Yannick Noah (1960), former Enigma singer Sandra (1962), former San Jose Sharks’ (among others) defenseman (and actor) Marty McSorley (1963), comedian Tina Fey (1970), former ECW legend The Blue Meanie (1973) and retired NFL quarterback Vince Young was born in 1983.

With this particular romp through my brain concluded…

# DXLI…Mother’s Day 2019…

On this first Mother’s Day since my own Mother was taken from this mortal coil, I could think of no other way to celebrate than with the above photo, which (in case you couldn’t tell) is an urn locket with her remains.  As some of you may find this reasoning a little on the morbid side, please know that my mother and I had a bond that will stand the test of time; I could not have asked God for a kinder, more caring individual, who believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself.

For all of the strong, kind and compassionate women who are lucky enough to be someone’s Mom, I hope many blessings come to you today from your children and loved ones…Lord only knows that I would love to physically relate my feelings again to mine…as well as to all the Mother’s that have been part of creating the generations before…

# DXL…”Metallica on Cellos”…

That is the perfect way to describe today’s honoree, Apocalyptica cellist (yes, cellist) Perttu Kivilaakso (1978), who was born on this date, May 11th, in Helsinki, Finland.  His unique group, consisting of three cellists and a drummer, started out covering Metallica songs on cello…some of the greatest music this writer has heard!

He plays with fellow cellists Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lotjonen and drummer Mikko Siren and they have been rocking the universe (just not the “bubblegum” crowd) since 1993, putting out an astonishing eight albums so far.  Their 2007 album “Worlds Collide” features collaborations with such artists as Lacuna Coil frontwoman Christina Sabbia, Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, and former Three Days Grace frontman Adam Grontier and is one of my all-time favorite albums of theirs.

A fine Finnish salute to you, Mr. Kivilaakso…and many happy more!

His birthday twins include; late artist Salvador Dali (1904-1989), late comedian Phil Silvers (1911-1985), late comedian Foster Brooks (1912-2001), late “Jesse Duke” Denver Pyle (1920-1997), religious leader Louis Farrakhan (1933), journalist/author Mike Lupica (1952), former MTV personality Martha Quinn (1959), late actress Natasha Richardson (1963-2009) and former wrestling superstar and trainer Billy Kidman (1974).

I bid you a fond adieu and thank you for coming…be back real soon…I promise…

# DXXXIX…Southpaw Nation Moment of Silence…

It is with a heavy heart that I now have to make this post…as the “King of the Surf Guitar”, Dick Dale (1937-2019), has gone to join Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix in Heaven.  After touring for most of his SIXTY YEAR career, Mr. Dale passed away on March 16, 2019, as Wikipedia states he was being treated for kidney and liver failure prior to his death.

The reason that this man had touched my soul, aside from the fact that he was a left-handed maestro, was that, even though his song “Misirlou” was popularized by the movie “Pulp Fiction”, he had a career that started WAY before I was even though of…but the fact that the man remained a working, touring guitarist even after his heydays in the 60’s proved to some that you’re never too old to do what you love!!!!!

If you’d like to know more about him, I have covered his birthday twice before; Post # LXXXV, “Return of the Saturday Spotlight, Vol. XV” from 2013 and Post # CLXXXIII, “The Birthday of a TRUE American Idol” from 2014 (which I will place on my Facebook @ James A. Johnson) entail all the details that I’ve written about him.

A true light of the universe that will sorely be missed…especially where his kind of longevity is rare…Rock and Roll Heaven has gotten a true king!
