# CDXLIII…”Green Arrow” Milestone…

In the book, today’s date, January 29th, covers the birthday of former “Smallville” co-star Justin Hartley (1977)…however, before posting it here, I just want to update it a little bit; although not mentioned, he did flourish after playing “Oliver Queen” from 2006 to 2011.  As a matter of fact, he was on “The Young and the Restless” soap opera (nominated for “Outstanding Lead Actor”) and is currently starring in the NBC drama, “This Is Us”…and, for his 40th birthday, I will leave this here…

# xv…Before “Arrow”…

Prior to the current domination shown by the smash CW hit, “Arrow”, and the rock-solid performance of Stephen Amell in that role, the hit CW show “Smallville” had a different version, one that was played by today’s birthday twin, Justin Hartley.  His on-screen performance as the billionaire philanthropist is one of legendary proportions.

As Oliver Queen, he had this unique performance that is, however and in this writer’s humble opinion, inferior to the quality of the latest portrayal.  However, for four years on the hit Superman show, he did a superb job as an action/comic hero star and will forever be linked to the character.

Also celebrating today are; late comedian W.C. Fields (1880-1946), late “Dynasty” and “Charlie’s Angels” star (voicing “Charlie”) John Forsythe (1918-2010), late NHL coach Pat Quinn (1943-2014), “Blue Bloods” (and former “Magnum, P.I.”) star Tom Selleck (who was also great in the movie “Runaway” with KISS’ Gene Simmons) was born in 1945, former “V” (science fiction mini-series from the 80’s) and “Beastmaster” star Marc Singer (who just did a surprising guest appearance in “Arrow”) was born in 1948 and media mogul Oprah Winfrey was born in 1954.

Also celebrating are; former MLB journeyman Steve Sax (1960), former wrestling personality “Hardcore” Bob Holly (1963), former NHL goalie legend Dominik Hasek (1965), actress Heather Graham (1970), former “Roseanne” co-star Sara Gilbert (1975) and current Memphis Grizzlies’ center Marc Gasol was born in 1985.

Hoping that you all have a happy birthday and many happy more…

# CDXLII…Excerpting Again…

As tomorrow’s date is just another in the long line of entries to this blog that ring a bell in my psyche, today, January 19th, I covered in my book (still on sale on Amazon for $9.99; bargain for all the work LOL)…and I figured that I would share this with you; it (the excerpting, I mean) may be the last one on this blog for awhile…

# x…”Piece of My Heart”…

Perhaps the most iconic song of the career of the late Janis Joplin (1943-1970), it also describes the feelings of this writer, in terms of where she places in my all-time favorite recording artists; an historic song which could have led this star to greater heights than she achieved in her very short, drug-addled life.

Although the above song was one of two that propelled her to stardom (the other being the classic “Down on Me”), it wasn’t until after her death that she charted her only Number One hit, the always popular “Me and Bobby McGee”.  At the young age of 27, she is a shining example of what the heavier drugs can do to a brilliant person and her light will be forever missed!

Also, celebrating today as their birthday are; late “All in the Family” matriarch Jean Stapleton (1923-2013), actress Tippi Hedren (“The Birds”) was born in 1930, The Everly Brothers’ Phil Everly (1939-2014), former WWF/E personality Pat Patterson (1941), country music icon Dolly Parton (1946) and author/chef Paula Deen was born in 1947.

Late 80’s rocker Robert Palmer, whose hits included “Addicted to Love” and “Simply Irresistible” (1949-2003), former New York Mets’ southpaw Jon Matlack (1950), actor Desi Arnaz, Jr. (1953), “Sons of Anarchy”’s Katey Sagal (1954), comedian Paul Rodriguez (1955), popular artist Thomas Kinkade (1958) and late NFL star Junior Seau (1969-2012) continue today’s list.

Finishing the roster are; comedian Shawn Wayans (1971), actress Drea de Matteo (1972), current WWE personality “R-Truth”, aka Ron Killings (1972), Apocalyptica’s (cello-based rock group…look ‘em up) Antero Manninen was born in 1973, “Full House” co-star Jodie Sweetin (“Stephanie”) was born in 1982 and American gymnast Shawn Johnson was born in 1992.

Thanks for stopping by…

# CDXLI…Thievery of the Long Island Railroad, Part 1…

According to the latest rumor mills, the Long Island Railroad (which I’ve been riding every business day for six years and counting) is planning to yet again put another dent in my always-empty wallet by the time March rolls around.  If you’re not familiar with the latest propaganda, however, this would seem like a “well, they really need the money” type of situation.  For someone who rides this antiquated system daily, on the other hand, this is the exact moment that something should be (and, in this blog post) reported to the authorities.

I am aware, as most people with a head on their shoulders, that variables sometimes take precedence (for example, when someone gets sick on the train, weather, etc.)  This railroad line, though, has had more incidents regarding “equipment problems” that makes me and everyone else that rides question what this agency is actually doing with the exorbitant amounts of money that we pay them every month.

Now, I am aware of the fact that the older “equipment” (sorry, that’s what they refer to their employees as) has to be taken care of…but, with all the broken rails, trains breaking down due to faulty parts (which has made me scramble to make alternate routes) and lack of general “customer service” {every time you ask them any question about disruption of service is met with “I don’t know”}, one has to wonder what it is they plan to do with the copious amounts of cash they receive every month!!!!

I am so tired of hearing “We apologize for (insert reason here)…” that I’ve recently starting telling them to take a plate and drop it on the floor and apologize to it.  Did their apology put the plate back together?  No, and that’s the issue…their apologies mean NOTHING because the system is flawed and broken and, before their plates are filled with filet mignon and champagne with all the money, they need to address the fact that the entire system needs to be overhauled, so that trains DON’T break down (ever heard of preventive maintenance?) and rider satisfaction needs to be improved; remember, without the riders of your railroad, you would be out of a job!

As I step down off my soapbox, I am just hoping that someone in power will see this and really address fixing the above issues, as I (and, I’m sure, my other fellow commuters) have had enough of this “we need more money” bullshit that this world has come to accept!!!

# CDXL…(440)…Excerpt for a Mentor…

On this short, first post of the New Year, I guess (since it hasn’t been covered in my blog at all) it is time for the last excerpt (if you all want more excerpts, buy the book…) for posting about one of the reasons that I have pursued this so far…it is a very short book entry concerning a man that started my writing endeavors…

# ii…”Foundation” of My Dreams…

Today, January 2nd, is the birthday of the most esteemed writer that I could ever have called a muse for my writing knack…”Foundation” author Dr. Isaac Asimov (1920-1992).  His works have included, as well, the basis for the movie, “I, Robot”, and the movie “Nightfall”, which is along the same lines as the movie “Pitch Black”.  I had read the Foundation novels in my younger days as a stay-at-home bookworm.  His writing style was just so mesmerizing and captivating that I couldn’t help but feel a somewhat “kindred” spirit with the man.

If you’re a science fiction fan or you know of one, he is a multi-award winning author whose works are unsurpassed…Happy Birthday in Heaven, Mr. Asimov…may your light shine eternally!

Also, of note, today is also celebrated by; “Tonight Show” zoologist Jack Hanna (1947), former MLB hurler David Cone and retired Seattle Mariners’ mainstay Edgar Martinez (both 1963), pugilist Pernell Whitaker (1964), actress Tia Carrere (1967), actor Cuba Gooding, Jr. (1968) and actor Taye Diggs was born in 1971.

Short and sweet today…don’t know what tomorrow holds but maybe psychohistory will have the answer soon…
