# CDXVIII…For My Hometown, An Uncovered Excerpt…

The following post, which appears in my book, “/,,,/ ROCK ON DUDEZ \,,,\” (Amazon Kindle only, sorry), is dedicated to the people in my “hometown” of Jersey City, NJ, as an historical event had happened on this date…so without further ado, I present the birthday twins of the infamous “Black Tom Incident”…

# cvii…Hometown History Lesson…

Although there are a multitude of names on the list for today’s date, July 30th, I figured that I would let you know about a piece of history from my “hometown” of Jersey City, NJ; the 1916 terrorist attack (German) at Black Toms Island, which was responsible for seven deaths and damages (including some to the nearby Statue of Liberty) in the millions of dollars.

You see, Black Toms Island served as a munitions storage location for the American Allied Forces in World War I and, as such, was targeted by German spies and sabotaged, to create one of the largest terrorist attacks on American soil.  About two million pounds of small arms and military ammunition were destroyed, along with about 100,000 pounds of TNT, igniting explosions felt in Philadelphia and Manhattan.

Just thought I’d let you know about my adopted hometown, as it is rich in history as well as my memories…

If it’s your birthday today, you also celebrate with; puppeteer Sid Krofft (1929), actor Edd “Kookie” Byrnes (1933), baseball executive Bud Selig (1934), singer/entertainer Paul Anka (1941), veteran Austrian actor Arnold Schwarzenegger (1947), actor Frank Stallone (1950) and veteran actress Delta Burke was born in 1956.

“The Matrix” co-star Laurence Fishburne (1961), actress Vivica A. Fox (1964), actor/comedian Terry Crews (1968), director/producer extraordinaire Christopher Nolan (1970), singer Elvis Crespo (1971), comedian/actor Tom Green (1971) and award-winning actress Hilary Swank (1974) finish this list of celebrity twins.

# CDXVII…Final Excerpt Before Monday…

The title refers to the fact that this date, July 23rd, hasn’t been covered, which I have been covering this year with little snippets from my book (releasing on the Kindle and Kindle family of apps this Monday…spread the word, please?)  This date is no different, as I now present to you the last book-created post (unless I get too lazy in the near future)…

# cv…He Only Needs One Name…

Today, July 23rd, is the birthday of former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash (1965), whose career in the industry pretty much put the band on the map from the awesome opening of the classic “Sweet Child O’ Mine”.  His performances on the band’s first five albums cemented their place in metal’s upper echelon of superstars.

He also has, currently, his “Slash’s Snakepit”, which is also a showcase for the man’s diverse and unique playing style and last worked with superstar musician Myles Kennedy as well as minor collaborations with other stars.  He is a well-respected but never duplicated icon in the business and we wish him many happy more!

Since he has a LOT of birthday twins, let’s get started; late baseball icon Pee Wee Reese (1918-1999), late actor/game show host Bert Convy (1933-1991), late Dodgers’ legend Don Drysdale (1936-1993), actor Ronny Cox {“Robocop”, among others} (1938), radio icon Don Imus (1940), actress Edie McClurg (1951), actor Woody Harrelson (1961) and actor Eriq LaSalle was born in 1962.

Also, celebrating are/were; late actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman (1967-2014), comedian Marlon Wayans (1972), former political “scandal” Monica Lewinsky (1973), former wrestler Sonny Siaki (1974), Destiny’s Child songstress Michelle Williams (1980), “The Vampire Diaries” co-star Paul Wesley {“Stefan”} (1987) and the everlasting and ubiquitous “Harry Potter”, Mr. Daniel Radcliffe was born in 1989.

Thank you again for coming…it means a lot, trust me, because I do this solely because of my love of writing…and teaching…

P.S.:  As I don’t have the type of capital that is required to advertise in more “convenient” ways, like on the TV, radio or in the papers, social media has become my way of “spreading the news”.  That having been said, I sinceriously (thank you, Stephen Amell) request, if you can, that you share, retweet, etc., as it would be greatly appreciated!

# CDXVI…Black Sabbath Icon for Uncovered Date…

Since I haven’t been here since last Friday (July 8) and I haven’t covered this date on the blog, I figured that I would just do what I have been doing since I finished the “project” (which will be released only on Amazon Kindle on August 8)…I hereby leave you with the following excerpt…

# cii…Legendary Bassist’s Celebration…

Today’s date, July 17th, is the birthdate of original (and current) bassist, Geezer Butler (1949), who, in case you didn’t know, has been with the band {with a couple of exceptions for solo and other collaborative works} since its inception in 1969.  Originally a rhythm guitarist, he actually made the iconic switch to a bass when lead guitarist (and fellow southpaw legend) Tony Iommi refused to play with a second guitarist.  I think I speak for all the rock-heads out there in saying that that was the best deal ever, as without it, you’d never have Geezer on bass for classics like “War Pigs”, “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”, “Paranoid”, and the like.

As he has been an integral part of Black Sabbath and will continue to be until their Final Tour ends later this year, his style is loved by all in the rock industry; such iconic bassists like Jason Newsted (Newsted/Metallica), Les Claypool (Primus), the late Cliff Burton (Metallica) and one of my favorites, John Myung (Dream Theater) list him as their idol for his sheer brilliance.

His fourteen album releases with Black Sabbath, combined with the above-mentioned solo/collaborations, and the fact that he’s been playing bass since before most of you were thought of means that he’s more than certainly earned his place here…Many happy more to you, Sir!

Also celebrating on this fine day are/were; “Perry Mason” creator Erle Stanley Gardner (1889-1970), late super-actor James Cagney (1899-1986), late entertainer Art Linkletter (1912-2010), late comedienne/actress Phyllis Diller (1917-2012), actress Diahann Carroll (1935) and actor Donald Sutherland (1935) predate the Black Sabbath superstar.

Born after him are; veteran actor David Hasselhoff (1952), “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984) heroine Heather Langenkamp (1964), actor Alex Winter {“Bill & Ted’s…” movies/”The Lost Boys”} (1965), Symphony X drummer (and New Jersey native) Jason Rullo (1972), country superstar Luke Bryan (1976) and former TNA/WWE star Mike Knox was born in 1978.

Thank you for coming with me down “rock-n-roll memory lane”…it’s always my pleasure to bring it to you…and, as always…

# CDXV…85th in Heaven, 1st in my Heart…

Today, July 8th, for the uninitiated, is a date constantly covered on this blog, as it is the birthdate of my father, Frederick Johnson (1931-1999).  He was a man whose very nature I have been trying to emulate my whole forty-five years of existence.  As my father, he did his job by instilling in me the very values I hold most dear…my “family” is the most important thing to me and I try my best to be the good human that he wanted me to be.

On this, his 85th birthday, I just wanted to drop by and wish him (and any other soul out there willing to listen LOL) a very Happy Birthday from his youngest…as I know that he’s partying with his brothers and sisters on this special milestone!  He’s probably got a guitar in his hands, playing some 50’s and 60’s music and singing up a storm.

As for some of his “twins” born today, the inventor of Coca-Cola, John Pemberton, was born in 1831, fashion designer Hugo Boss (1885-1948), singer/actor Jerry Vale (1930-2014), comedian Marty Feldman (Igor from Young Frankenstein) (1934-1982), the very talented signer/actor Steve Lawrence (1935), actor Jeffrey Tambor (1944), and chef du jour Wolfgang Puck (1949).

The newest Morticia Addams, Anjelica Huston, was born in 1951, Footloose star Kevin Bacon (1958), country superstar Toby Keith (1961), “Uncanny X-Men” artist/writer Whilce Portacio (1963), folksy artist Beck (1970), and guitarist/singer Elias Viljanen of the group Sonata Arctica (who I will be seeing in September) was born in 1975.

Thank you for listening and…

# CDXIV…Updated Reblog from 2015…from the book…

As there was new information since the original post you’re about to read, I figured that I would give you all one last excerpt from the book…being that it comes out on August 8 (Kindle)…and hope you all enjoy…

# CCCXXXV…For America’s “Twins”…

Since I have been posting, July 4th has been a birthday-less date in which I haven’t given you the list of people that are celebrating the birth of this once great nation.  That having been said, we already know that this country was “born” 239 years ago and that is a testament to the longevity of our country.

As I don’t want to take up too much time (which everyone is devoting to the celebrations that today brings), I will present to you the post-1900 (natch) list of “twins”; late real estate mogul Leona Helmsley (1920-2007), actress Eva Marie Saint (1924), Italian bombshell Gina Lollobrigida (1927), playwright Neil Simon (1927), late New York Yankees’ owner George Steinbrenner (1930-2010) and disgraced former journalist Geraldo Rivera was born in 1943.

Red-white-and-blue salutes also go to; Bad English guitarist John Waite (1952), former wrestler Barry Windham (1960), ESPNs Pam Shriver (1962), Stryper and Boston guitarist Michael Sweet (1963), former 80s hair band heartthrob Mark Slaughter (1964), former Saints’ defensemen (plural) La’Roi Glover (1974) and Will Smith (1981)* and southpaw Maple Leafs’ defenseman Jake Gardiner was born in 1990.

I hope that you all have a SAFE and enjoyable holiday…now, I have things to do and so I bid you all adieu and…

*(Two sidenotes:  Will Smith was killed in a heinous “road rage” incident on April 9, 2016 in New Orleans and July 4th is also the birthday of BabyMetal singer/dancer Moa Kikuchi (1999)).
