# CDVII…Rock Spotlight, Vol. IV…BABYMETAL, “BabyMetal” and “Metal Resistance”…

This special edition post is something that I’ve been putting off for a month now and it’s driving me batty, to be honest.  This band, which has been featured on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” (according to recent research), has been on my mind since my late brother mentioned them shortly before his passing last year (some five years after their 2010 debut on the music scene).

As you can tell if you’ve been paying attention to social media (they have quite a vast selection of videos on YouTube, as do a lot of people these days…), they are a Japanese addition to the musical world, which is why they are in my collection, as they are a spinoff of a highly-popular J-pop group known as Sakura Gakuin.  In addition, they have worked with heavy metal “giants” DragonForce, on maybe a couple of tracks.

With the stage names of Su-Metal, Yu-Metal and Mo-Metal, and along with their traveling bandmates (one of which I think is a left-handed guitarist), they have struck a very resounding chord in my musical appreciation of the universe.  I cannot understand much of what they are singing but, in my opinion at least, language has no boundaries, as the energy that they are bringing to the metal community (and Rob Zombie also approves) is off the charts.

Being that your interest my have been piqued by this post, rest assured as this band looks like it is here to stay…at least I hope so.  With such hits as the ever-popular track that they performed on the American TV show, “Gimme Chocolate!!!” and, of course, the first track on the first album, “BabyMetal Death” (which starts of with an almost spiritualistic choir), the highly-addictive “Song 4”, and the “J-pop” classic “Doki Doki Morning” on the first album and, on their sophomore venture, have such hits as “Amore”, the upbeat “Awadama Fever”, “KARATE” and an English track called “THE ONE”, they have enthralled TENS OF THOUSANDS of screaming metal fans, which they command at their live performances…and my brother was right in finding them for me.

I have done my job introducing them to you…what you do with this knowledge is up to you.  Thank you, as always for coming, and maybe I will be moving up in this world…as I might try something weird really soon…but until then…

# CDVI…Congratulations to Western Conference Champions!!!!

In case you haven’t heard yet, the San Jose Sharks are, for the first time in their 25-year existence, the champions of the Western Conference in hockey and are in the first-ever Stanley Cup Finals, which start on Monday (against the Pittsburgh Penguins)!  Now this may not mean much to you, my adoring fans, but (if you haven’t been following) I have been a fan of the West Coast team since their inception in 1991.

I was actually sitting in a Chinese restaurant in downtown Manhattan (where I worked at the time) and was enjoying a quiet lunch while reading the Daily News…it was actually more of a “ritualistic” thing…when I had read in the sports section that the fledgling city was being awarded a franchise.  The minute I read that, combined with the unveiling of their initial logo (which has been upgraded since then), I was hooked…pun very intended!

Coach DeBoer is an amazing godsend.  His leadership of phenoms like Joe Pavelski, Patrick Marleau, Joe Thornton, Brett Burns, Martin Jones (awesome goalie…Nabby (my action figure that’s been featured here before) is very approving…keep it up!) and Joel Ward, to name a few, has been outstanding and I am hoping that we can keep it up!

Needless to say, after twenty-five long agonizing years, I can finally smile silently with either of my jerseys on and think what I’ve been thinking this whole time; don’t underestimate us because, when that day finally arrives when WE can hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup, I will have my redemption!!!!

# CDV…(405)…Memory in Book Form…

I will just let the following excerpt speak for itself…

# lxxiv…”Send Me an Angel”…

Today’s date is May 25th and, from looking at today’s calendar, I find out that it is the birthday of The Scorpions’ frontman Klaus Meine (1948).  The reason that this man’s name is on today’s list is the fact that the band has been rocking the scene since 1965…yes, folks, you read that correctly…this man has been fronting this German wunderkind band for 50 years…you’d be hard-pressed to find one with that much longevity.

However, with the band’s multiplicity of awards and honors, it is the title above that will always stick in my head with this band.  The story behind it was I was actually singing this song, to the sky, of course, when I heard that I was going to become a father, on my porch in Highlands, NJ…as the album was released in 1990…aaah…the lovely memories before kids!

Anyways, if you get the chance to check out their extensive catalogue, please do so…18 albums in 50 years means you can enjoy Klaus’ unique voice…

Presenting the birthday twins of the German superstar; late actor Claude Akins (1926-1994), late author Robert Ludlum (1927-2001), late opera star Beverly Sills (1929-2007), country legend Tom T. Hall (1936), late “Designing Women” star Dixie Carter (1939-2010), everyone’s favorite “Master of Magnetism” Sir Ian McKellen (1939) and actress Leslie Uggams was born in 1943.

Famous puppeteer and actor Frank Oz (1944), actress Connie Sellecca (1955), comedian/actor Mike Myers (1963), Megadeth and King Diamond guitarist Glen Drover (1969), actress Anne Heche (1969), actor Jamie Kennedy (1970), wrestling star Alberto del Rio (1977), NFL linebacker Brian Urlacher (1978), famous racing family member A.J. Foyt IV (1984) and wrestling personalities Roman Reigns (1985) and Bo Dallas (1990) finish the list for today.

Until we next meet…in the future…

{The above photo is a combination of the newspaper clip that my Aunt Irene wrote one year after my Father’s death and a poppy from his American Legion post.  The date, however, is a misprint (it says “May 22, 1999”)}

“It’s been a year since you left us, my little brother, and the pain in my heart is as strong as it was the day you were gone.  You were always special to me because you were the youngest of my five brothers, and we were always very close.  You weren’t just my brother, you were everybody’s kind of guy.  Everyone who knew you loved you.  You were also the proudest Marine I ever knew, and your Distinguished Medal of Honor you waited so patiently for came six months after you left us.  But somehow I feel that you know we have it and treasure it.  God must have wanted…

# CLXXXVIII…”Miss Jackson…If You’re Nasty”…

Sorry for the late reblog…she’s 49 today!!! And, Happy Birthday, Zeggy!!!

Dal's Music Note$

Yes, as the title implies, it is the 48th birthday of the youngest member of The Jacksons’ musical family, as Miss Janet was born today in 1966.  As an accomplished entertainer, her works have only been rivaled by her brother Michael in terms of overall longevity and success.  She has also been an actress on such 70s and 80s classic shows like Good Times, Diff’rent Strokes, and Fame.  Of course, I will cut this off with the fact that she also changed TV with the infamous Super Bowl “wardrobe malfunction”…but that was a minor speed bump in her long, storied career.

Also celebrating today would have been veteran actor Henry Fonda (1905-1982), flamboyant pianist Liberace (1919-1987), former Yankee manager Billy Martin (1928-1989), the original “Batgirl” from the original ’60s Batman, Yvonne Craig (1937), the star of Machete and its sequel (and a TON of other movies), Danny Trejo was…

# CCCXVI…”More Than Happy”…

Dal's Music Note$

The above quote is from the master comedian who would have celebrated his birthday today, George Carlin (1937-2008).  It was actually, according to one of his skits, the punchline for his rant on words and phrases that are overused.  The exact punchline was, “More than happy…sounds like a serious condition…’We had to put Dave in the mental home…he was, ahhhh, more than happy!'”

It’s also how everyone should be today, as all of Mr. Carlin’s works can be absolutely hilarious.  From playing a Catholic Cardinal in “Dogma” to the countless stand-up works over the decades, George Carlin will forever be remembered (by me, especially) as the Greatest Comedian to ever live!!

We miss you, George and RIP…

Also born on this date were; former Yankee great Yogi Berra (1925), journalist Tom Snyder (1936-2007), guitarist Steve Winwood (1948), actor Bruce Boxleitner (1950), guitar great Billy Squier (1950), country great Kix Brooks…

# CDIV…For Sister-in-Law…

As shocking as this may be, I actually haven’t posted on this date, either…shocking because it happens to be the birthday of my sister-in-law (my late brother’s ex)…that and the fact that it is also Cinco de Mayo…which brings me to my next excerpt, just for all of you celebrating either one today…

# lxiii…Cervezas for Everyone (Cinco de Mayo)…

For years, and like so many other Americans in this great nation, I have mistaken today, May 5th, as the celebration of Mexico’s independence.  As I have just learned, however, it is actually the celebration of a military victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.  It was, in history’s opinion, the “David vs. Goliath” of the 1800’s, as the much-larger 5000 troop French army was wiped out by the 2000 or so Mexican rebels.

This invasion by the French at that time was due to an order by Mexican President Benito Juarez to suspend payments of debts, due to his country’s Reform War (1858-1861), which had left Mexico in dire straits financially.  The British and Spanish peoples, who were also a target of the loan repayment issues, negotiated with Mexico and were fine with the outcome.  France, which at the time was under Napoleon’s rule, did not take that lightly and sent the fleet to Mexico…and the rest, as they say, is history.

For those that are unaware, like I was, the TRUE date of Mexican Independence Day is September 16th

Now, on to the list for today; late actress Ann B. Davis {“Alice” from “The Brady Bunch”} (1926-2014), veteran raspy-voiced actor Lance Henriksen (1940), former “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” alum Marc Alaimo (1942), late country diva Tammy Wynette (1942-1998), actor/comedian Michael Palin (1943), former “Sliders” co-star John Rhys-Davies (1944) and former MTV veejay Kurt Loder was born in 1945.

Black Sabbath drummer (and co-founder) Bill Ward (1948), actress Melinda Culea {“The A-Team” 80’s series} (1955), Overkill (heavy metal) lead singer/bassist Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth (1959), Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie (1963), actress/singer Tina Yothers (1973), former “Boy Meets World” co-star Danielle Fishel (1981), current “Superman”, Henry Cavill (1983) and renowned singer Adele was born in 1988.

Be back soon…not sure when…busy schedule, and all…
