I cannot apologize for the bad pun title…while it is entirely true that this is All Saints Day on the calendar, it was also on this date, in 1966, that founders John Mecom, Jr. and David Dixon were awarded the NFL franchise in New Orleans. Although the team was named after the great song, “When the Saints Go Marching In” (our anthem), it was a pleasant coincidence that the franchise was awarded to them on November 1 (All Saints Day, in the Catholic community).

Also, on a humorous side note, a local member of the Catholic Church, Archbishop Philip M. Hannan, at that time, expressed that “he liked the name…as he had an idea that the team was going to need all the help it could get”.
