Today’s post is solely about a man who, although no longer with us, deserves his own place in the spotlight: Mr. Ronnie James Dio, who was born on this date in 1942. Taken from this mortal plane four years ago, the man is credited with originating the “devil’s horns” and a career that spanned an impressive six decades.
His songs, in case you haven’t heard, run the gamut from medieval themes to stirring, heartfelt ballads and his diminutive size was a misnomer, as the man had a vocal range that outshines most of today’s “auto tune bubblegum” singers. After being in bands that didn’t quite make it, Mr. Dio ran Elf, his band from 1970 to 1975, Rainbow (with Ritchie Blackmore , who had recruited him from Elf) from 1975 to 1979, which led him to Black Sabbath from 1979 to 1982, the eponymous Dio (the band) from 1982 to 2010, and Heaven & Hell, a collaboration of Black Sabbath’s southpaw legend Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice.
Ronnie James Dio will forever be missed on this merry-go-round that we call life…
