# CXLIV…First Post of 2014…Odd Birthday List on a Snow Day…

On this brutally cold day in Mastic, NY (with temperatures tonight in the single digits and wind chills below zero), I have found myself perusing The List and have found a couple of interesting names on it.  Like the fact that today would have been the birthday of world-renowned author (and current “hot commodity” because of the Number 1 movie in America) J.R.R. Tolkien, who was born on this date in 1892 in southern South Africa.  A brilliant author in his day, Mr. Tolkien’s works are currently the hottest thing in the country, apparently.

A personal note:  I haven’t read them and, currently, have no interest in reading them, as I am more of a science fiction type of reader.  I always thought that The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings were too highly advanced in fantasy (which is another reason I didn’t finish the Roger Zalazny set, “The Chronicles of Amber”) for my taste and, to this date, have only seen the first of the recent movies.

{…readying hate-mail and torch protection…}

Also on today’s list in late Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams (1923-2013), Super Bowl IV winning coach [K.C. Chiefs] Hank Stram (1923-2005), veteran actor Robert Loggia (1930), actor/comedian Dabney Coleman [the boss in the classic movie “9 to 5″‘] was born in 1932, Hockey Hall of Famer Bobby Hull (who played for the original Winnipeg Jets) was born in 1939, former Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young vocalist Stephen Stills (1945) and former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones was born in 1946.

Also of note is veteran actress Victoria Principal (Pamela Ewing from “Dallas”…grey hairs LOL), joining us on this date in 1950, WWE annoucer/entrepreneur “J.R.” Jim Ross (1952), “Lethal Weapon” [among others] star Mel Gibson (1954), former ECW wrestlers Vic Grimes and New Jack, who both had an injury-laced feud with each other, both born on this date in 1963, former New York Giants wide receiver David Tyree (“Helmet Catch”) was born in 1980 and current New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning (as I said last year, I can’t hate a Manning) was born in 1981.

Now, back to your regularly-scheduled lives…
