# CLI…”Composing” a Birthday List…

On this date, January 27th, it has been brought to my attention that two people that I know personally (one through my job and the other through my hobby) share a birthday today.  With that having been said, I am using this space to acknowledge their joyous celebrations (Happy birthday to Veronica and Lulu {used to own Lulu’s in Port Jefferson, which I’ve written about here} and many happy more) and to give them the honor of reading the list of famous names that share their special day.

The list begins with the reason for the bad pun in my title:  Mr. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the world-renown composer, was born on this date (1756-1791) and is continued with:  Lewis Carroll, the author of the famous “Alice in Wonderland” books (1832-1898); Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney (1901-1988); journalist/publisher William Randolph Hearst, Jr. (1908-1993); the creator of “Alvin & The Chipmunks”, Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. (who also went by his stage name of David Seville) was born in 1919 (1919-1972); late actress Donna Reed (1921-1986); 1950’s heartthrob Troy Donahue (1936-2001); actor James Cromwell, who had big hits with “Babe” (with the pig LOL) and “The Green Mile” (1940); Pink Floyd drummer/songwriter Nick Mason (1944) and Russian dancer/choreographer Mikhail Baryshnikov was born in 1948.

Also of note is it the 60th birthday of one of the co-creators of the hit cartoon/comic “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, Mr. Peter Laird, who was born in 1954, artist/producer/director Frank Miller (such hits as “300” and “The Dark Knight Returns” movies and the comic book “Elektra”) was born in 1957, former Cincinnati Bengals mainstay Cris Collinsworth and journalist Keith Olbermann were born in 1959, and actress Bridget Fonda was born in 1964.

As always, there are more names on the list but that is what next year is for…

# CL (150!!!)…Comedic Genius Birthday…

Today, since I wrote about January 24th last year and didn’t finish my list (as I mentioned that I could have), would have been the 74th birthday of  the ever-brilliant John Belushi (1949).  A brilliant performer in his prime on Saturday  Night Live, with his partner in The Blues Brothers, his comedy genius is only surpassed by his sibling, Jim Belushi.

Since I have a lot of names to cover, let’s get started…today is the birthday of late actor Ernest Borgnine (who, recently, before his death, became known as the voice of Mermaidman on the ever-popular Spongebob Squarepants) <1917>,  evangelist Oral Roberts (1918),  The Amazing Spider-Man penciller John Romita, Sr. (1930), singer-comedian Ray Stevens, who had a hit with a song called “The Streak”, which was about a man who ran around naked,  singer Neil Diamond (mentioned last year) was born in 1941, and actress Sharon Tate, who was murdered by members of the Manson Family in 1969, was born in 1943.

Late ECW superstar Mike Awesome was born in 1965, Dream Theater (remember, my fav band) bassist John Myung (also mentioned last year) was born on 1967, gymnast Mary Lou Retton was born in 1968, actor Matthew Lillard (Shaggy in the most recent Scooby-Doo movies) in 1970, The Fresh Prince’s Tatyana Ali was born in 1979, and former baseball rookie phenom Scott Kazmir was born in 1984.

There are just a couple of more names on the list…but we’ll leave them for next year…

# CXLIX…For My Dear Friend Mike…

As I mentioned last year on this date, today is the birthday of a close personal friend of mine…Mr. Mike Reinke, whom I’ve known since forever. It is his 36th birthday and, with that and in his honor, I hereby complete the list of people born today.

Starting with the birthday of the most notorious gangster to walk the Earth, Al Capone (1899-1947), actress/comedienne Betty White (1922), former Catwoman Eartha Kitt (1927-2008), hair care specialist Vidal Sassoon (1928-2012), the voice of Darth Vader, Mr. James Earl Jones (1931), former Yankees coach Don Zimmer (1931), late puppeteer Shari Lewis (1933-1998), and talk show host Maury Povich (1939).

Also, the legendary pugilist Muhammed Ali was born in 1942, late comedian Andy Kaufman (1949-1984), The Rolling Stones’ guitarist Mick Taylor (1949), comedian Steve Harvey (1957), former Bangles singer Susanna Hoffs (1959), oddly ironic that Jim Carrey (who played the above Andy Kaufman) was born in 1962, First Lady Michelle Obama (1964), Jamaican rapper Shabba Ranks (1966), and former Sharks player Jeremy Roenick and cartoonist Genndy Tartakovsky {“Dexter’s Lab”} were both born in 1970.

Worth mentioning to finish are the 1971 birthday of Kid Rock and former wrestler Kevin Thorne was born in 1977, as well as the 1982 birthday of Dwayne Wade and the 1985 birthday of Epica frontwoman Simone Simons.

Thank you all for listening…all three (LOL) of you…

# CXLVIII…Not just Martin Luther King’s…

As most people are aware, today would have been the 85th birthday of the iconic reverend (1929-1968). But, as I am always checking these facts out, more names are on the list that I must mention (that’s why I’m still here)…

Starting today’s list (and the reason I love his quote, “I picked a hell of a week to quit drinking!”) is the late great comedian Lloyd Bridges (1913-1998), late Lynyrd Skynyrd icon Ronnie Van Zant (1948-1977), former Cowboys staple Randy White (1953), career New York Jet Marty Lyons (1957), veteran actor Mario Van Peebles (1957) and Tool guitarist Adam Jones was born in 1965.

Also on the list is former 80’s icon Lisa Lisa, who was born in 1966, WWE scion Shane McMahon (1970), ultimate Saints quarterback Drew Brees (1979), rapper Pitbull was born in 1981, former WWE diva (and very sexy still) Kelly Kelly in 1987, and popular (don’t know why myself) DJ Skrillex was born in 1988.

With this post out of the way now…

# CXLVII…Completing January 12 List…

As none of you may recall, last year on January 12th, I posted about the fact that it is the birthday today of two musical icons (Mr. Rob Zombie, born in 1965, and Zack de la Rocha [Rage Against the Machine] born in 1970).  However, I would like to take this time to finish the list, as a lot of famous names were born today.

We’ll start the list off with the former hockey player/businessman Tim Horton (yes, that Tim Horton…from the chain of the same name) {1930-1974}, former vocalist for The Oak Ridge Boys, William Lee Golden (1939), the late, great boxer Joe Frazier (1944-2011), former New Orleans Saints kicker Tom Dempsey (the first to ever kick a 63-yard field goal…with half of his foot, as he was born with no toes on his kicking foot) was born in 1947, comedienne Kirstie Alley and radio personality Rush Limbaugh were both born on this date in 1951, shock jock extraordinaire Howard Stern (1954) and multi-talented actor Oliver Platt (who played in such classics as “The Three Musketeers” and “2012′) was born in 1960.

1962 saw the birth of a brilliant comic book writer, Mr. Joe Quesada, whose credits include a wide range of Marvel, DC and independent comics and former WWE women’s wrestler Luna Vachon (1962-2010), country singer-songwriter Keith Anderson (1968), and Spice Girls’ “Sporty” Spice, Melanie Chisholm (or Mel C) was born in 1974.

Also, finishing today’s post, just for my eldest daughter, I will mention that it is also the 21st birthday of One Direction’s Zayn Malik…only mentioned for purposes of my daughter seeing it in print…I personally could care less but he is on today’s list so there you have it.

# CXLVI…”If I only had a brain…”

Although the title could obviously refer to some of the people that I know personally, it is actually because it is the birthday of Ray Bolger, whom, of course, played The Scarecrow in the original “The Wizard of Oz” (1904-1987).  Also, it is the birthday of American pianist Johnnie Ray…yes, the same Johnnie Ray at the beginning of the classic 80’s smash “Come On Eileen”.

Baseball Hall of Fame southpaw Willie McCovey celebrates his 76th birthday today (1938), actor Sal Mineo, who played opposite James Dean in “Rebel Without a Cause” (1939-1976), singer-songwriter Jim Croce (“Time In a Bottle”) {1943-1973}, as well as singer Frank Sinatra, Jr. (1944), superstar rocker Rod Stewart (1945) and rock diva Pat Benatar was born in 1953.

The guitarist for The Scorpions, Michael Schenker, was born on this date in 1955, “The Fairly Oddparents” creator Butch Hartman in 1965, and, in an odd twist because I still have his autographed photo, former WCW superstar Buff Bagwell was born in 1970, former WWE superstar Brian “GrandMaster Sexay” Lawler in 1972, former boxer Felix “Tito” Trinidad (who I saw get whipped by southpaw Winky Wright) was born in 1973, and current WWE diva Tamina Snuka (whose father gave me his autograph at the same show as Buff Bagwell…yes, I have Superfly’s autograph!!!) was born in 1978.

Thank you for reading…be back soon…

# CCLXXI…Birth of “The King”…of Rock-n-Roll! (updated)

If you haven’t already heard, today would have been the 80th birthday of The King of Rock-n-Roll, Elvis Presley.  His unmistakable voice and personality have forever echoed in my mind…as my mother is one of the biggest fans of his that I’ve ever known.  Born in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935, he moved to Memphis when he was a teenager…and the rest, as they say, is history.

Twenty-plus years, ten Number One albums, 18 Number One singles…the guy was a legend, whose brilliance as a singer, actor and musician will live forever.  Of course, we all know how his career ended…if you don’t, then you can do the research (I lived through his later years LOL).

Also born today are CBS News Sunday Morning host Charles Osgood (1933), former game show host (of many shows) Bob Eubanks (1938), “Monty Python” alumnus Graham Chapman (1941-1989), physicist Stephen Hawking (1942), The Doors guitarist Robbie Krieger (1946),  multi-talented artist David Bowie (1947), former Loverboy lead vocalist Mike Love (1955) and R. Kelly was born on this day in 1967.

Also, modern day pariah Jason Giambi was born in 1971, former Red Sox/Yankee journeyman Carl Pavano (1976) and, in a really weird twist, today is the 32nd birthday of the Supreme Ruler of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, whose name I only bring up because of the recent scandal provoked by the movie, “The Interview”…and the fact that my birthday twin James Franco was involved in that!
